Atlantic City International Airport

A Pleasant Change From The Hustle And Bustle Of Air Travel

On a recent trip, I had the opportunity to visit the Atlantic City International Airport in Little Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. Approximately 10 miles from the boardwalk casinos, there are presently three airlines operating out of Atlantic City - Airtran, Spirit, and most recently, West Jet, a Canadian based air carrier. But with a $273 million expansion being planned, this is sure to change in the near future. Right now travelers can experience low-stress travel, easy parking, quick security check-ins -- an overall pleasant travel experience. This, along with low fares, is a great incentive for travelers to try out the Atlantic City Airport. And, if you've ever driven to the Newark or Philadelphia Airports, you'll appreciate the easy travel to Atlantic City, even during peak traffic hours.

Some of the anticipated changes being planned include:

  • A 75,000 square foot addition to the terminal
  • Three additional gates and a federal inspection station for customs
  • A new baggage screening facility
  • Electronic monitors at ticket counters and gates, displaying airline logos and flight information
  • Eventually connecting the Atlantic City Expressway to the Airport, making driving in the area easier

Some of the benefits of this expansion include:

  • Ability to serve more people who live in the general area
  • Easing airport and air space traffic at Newark and Philadelphia Airports
  • Generate more business for the Atlantic City casinos by bringing visitors back and forth to the beautiful Jersey Shore
  • More airlines, flights, and destinations will be added

Curiosity getting the best of me, I decided to take a flight from Atlantic City to Atlanta, GA rather than my usual travel route out of Newark. Some of the differences I noted:

  • Less air travel time from Atlantic City than from Newark (about a half hour flying time difference)
  • When being picked up, my driver was able to park in front of the airport while waiting for me (unlike the larger airports that don't permit this)
  • Cheaper fares
  • Quick retrieval of checked baggage

All in all, it was a great experience.
