National Lighthouse Day, August 7, was originally started to educate people of the important role lighthouses have played in the history of our country.

Listed below are some of Jersey's finest lighthouses, spanning 7 counties on the state's coastline. We have listed 11, all with interesting history, making your tour worthwhile.

  • Sandy Hook - oldest operating lighthouse in the country that stands as originally constructed. 718-354-4606.
  • Navesink Twin Lights - located in Highlands, NJ, overlooking the Shrewsbury River, Sandy Hook, Raritan Bay, New York Skyline, and the Atlantic Ocean. For hours, call 732-872-1814.
  • Sea Girt - Beacon & Ocean Avenue, Sea Girt. 732-974-0514
  • Barnegat (pictured above) - known as "Old Barney", 172 feet tall with 217 steps to the top. It's located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island. 609-494-2016
  • Tucker's Island - located in Tuckerton Seaport, a working maritime village in Ocean County. Call 609-296-8868 for upcoming events.
  • Absecon - the tallest lighthouse along the Jersey Shore, having 228 steps. 800-758-1444
  • Hereford Inlet - located in North Wildwood. 609-522-4520.
  • Cape May - journey to the top of Cape May's lighthouse to view picturesque views of the sea. Located in Cape May Point State Park. 609-884-5404.
  • East Point - located on the northern side of the Delaware Bay in Cumberland County. 609-884-8656.
  • Finn's Point - located south of Pennsville in Salem County. 856-935-3218.
  • Tinicum - Second Street and Mantua Avenue along the shores of the Delaware River in Paulsboro. 609-449-1360.
