Jerome, Arizona aka Ghost City. What was once a booming copper mining town and known as the "Ghost City", has now become an artistic community - artists, writers, musicians, craft people, and historians now call Jerome home.
With population dropping in the 1950's to about 50 residents from approximately 15,000 in the 1920's, Jerome did a turnaround and began an upswing surge, preserving a rich foundation of history. Labeled "the wickedest town of the west" due to the many saloons, gambling, and brothels, today the town boasts at least 450 residents.
A town that has tried to preserve the charm of the last 100 years, Jerome is open to tourists year round with over 30 galleries and working studios, gift shops, museums, restaurants, bed and breakfast inns, and history at every turn. Take a carriage ride with a billion dollar view, visit the Douglas Museum. And don't forget to visit the Jerome Winery near the main strip for local wines and some remarkable stories of Jerome's history. Located at 403 Clark Street. Call for hours (928) 639-9067. General consensus, a trip worth taking!
Wickenburg Dude Ranches. For a change of pace, if you've never tried it, you might enjoy some time at a dude ranch. With horseback riding as part of your daily entertainment, riding lessons, and, if you're at a "working ranch", participation in a cattle drive, you'll experience a true feeling of the excitement and lifestyle of the old west. Guided hikes, nature walks, mountain biking, fishing, country cookouts, and western style dancing round out your day.
Travel approximately 50 miles from Phoenix to Wickenburg where you'll find another world, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. The dude ranches in the area, usually accepting small numbers of guests at a time to create a cozy, home style atmosphere, assure you of friendly surroundings with family style gourmet meals. Choose from rustic, simple accommodations to the fanciest of resorts with all the amenities.
One worth trying in Wickenburg is the Kay El Bar, operating since 1926 and listed on the National and Arizona Registers of Historic Places. Further information can be obtained by calling (928) 684-7593
