Travel Cents
Don't let the soaring gas prices discourage you from taking your much needed vacation this year. There are a number of ways to minimize expenses when traveling.
- For a change of pace, how about a cruise? Park your car and all aboard for 5, 7, or 10 days on the open seas.
- One stop destinations, no extra traveling. Try camping, dude ranches, Disneyland.
- Choose a city with good public transportation: Washington D.C., NYC, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Santa Monica.
- For less expensive lodging, choose a hotel outside the city limits. And, remember, if you're traveling with children, check out the hotels that have a "kids stay free policy".
- Stay close to home. Investigate all the possibilities. You may be surprised at how much you'll find to do in your own backyard. Visit our page on Staycations, Daycations, and Day-Tripping
- Wherever you travel, check for discount coupons. Entertainment Books are a great way to save money on food (fine dining, casual and fast food), local attractions such as movies, bowling, zoos and so much more. Books are sold in many areas across the country, purchase before you leave home and be prepared.
- Use a large soft-sided insulated food carrier with Velcro tabs to close. It's great to use as your carry-on piece when flying. Pack items you don't want to lose and when you reach your destination, the insulated carrier can be used for sodas and snacks for the kids, saving you money.
- Staying with family or friends when you travel? Mail toiletries prior to your departure, avoiding long lines opening your carry-on and possibly having to dispose of articles not approved. Or, better yet, make a list and upon arrival, hit the nearest drug store and purchase whatever you need.
- Any breakables in your luggage? Try bubble wrap to insure against breakage.
- To save time at the baggage claim, I use brightly colored curling ribbon on my black luggage in order to spot it quickly as it comes off the conveyor belt.
- Before your trip, have your car serviced for maximum performance and always carry a map to prevent getting lost and running out of gas. And speaking of running out of gas, have you checked your gas cap lately? Make sure the seal is secure to avoid evaporation.
- When you're out on the open road, use your cruise control, it will help conserve fuel.
- Have you thought of renting a car to use on your vacation? You may find an economical rental to be better on gas than your own vehicle. You'll also save on wear and tear on your car and have the reassurance of roadside help from the rental company should you need assistance during your trip.
